Benrubi Gallery is thrilled to announce our first solo exhibition, "Intervals," with gallery artist Xan Padrón. Padron's work is a meditation on the tempo of our lives. For our debut exhibition we will be showing a selection of his celebrated "Time Lapse" series. The series was born out of a solitary moment for the artist while making photographs for an earlier project "Motion City," photographing from public buses. Padron stepped off the bus and sat in stillness, watching the world move before him and was struck by the revelation of people and place, not just of who is passing by but what they reveal about the city they inhabit. In wonderment of the quotidian gestures and moments that make up the richness of our lives, he had found the heart of what became "Time Lapse."
Padron began his adult professional life as a bass player, a working musician traveling from city to city, but always with a camera. He was introduced to photography by the photojournalist Enrique Reza and was raised by a journalist father. For Padron his practice is built on these: the musical and the sociological. In "Time Lapse" he has, by stitching together the micro moments of a chosen location, created a unique synesthesia of visual sound: the beat of our feet on the pavement, the personality of a city as an elegant sequence much like the notes of a song. The identity of a place and the rhythm of its people, a perfect symphony.
Time Lapse has been the focus of solo exhibitions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, The Pfizer Building in New York, the Sala Valente in Ourense (Spain), among other venues.
In 2023, Padrón was invited by the MTA Arts & Design Program to exhibit at the Bryant Park subway station in New York City. His work has been featured in international publications such as New England Review, Die Zeit Magazine, and Harvard Business Review, as well as in the cover of academic anthologies like "Race, Class and Gender in the United States" (MacMillan, 2020) and "Personal Networks" (Cambridge University Press, 2021). His Time Lapses were also selected for the Art on Link program by the City of New York.
